What is OurHerd
The OurHerd app allows you to view, create and share safe, relatable and engaging stories about navigating tough times. All stories hosted on OurHerd are drawn from a community of storytellers. Every story is moderated, so you know they are safe, real, honest and authentic.
The Brief
Batyr was looking to enhance and create new experiences for OurHerd users in two main areas:
- Create a better way to create and share stories in the OurHerd App
- Add in new ways for users to track their mental wellbeing through a wellbeing section in the OurHerd app
Deliverables
- Wireframes & / or prototype designs for potential solutions
- Findings & Recommendations report that includes designs of potential solutions, insights gained from engaging users and recommended next steps
- Roadmap for short (0-6 months), medium (6-12 months) and long term (12+ months)
- User personas representing different types of story creators
- A prototype(s) of the recommended story creation flow(s)
- An insights report outlining key findings from user testing & levers to gain more stories
UX Process
The Two Problem Statements
Story Creation
Young Australians with mental health concerns feel apprehensive about sharing their story with others and need to feel confident and supported but are worried about stigma and judgement.
Holistic Wellness
Young Australians feel confused about how best to look after their mental health and need information and support but don't know where to easily access this information.
Understanding the Users
After conducting rounds of user surveys and interviews we were able to better understand the two very diverse user groups of OurHerd with valuable key insights to ground our research in.
Key Insights
- 95% will reach out to friends for support
- 3 in 4 use Instagram the most
- 87% don't share vulnerable stories online
- 1 in 2 are content creators online
- 51% track their exercise, sleep or nutrition through smart technology
These key insights became the basis of our personas and customer journeys.
Personas, Customer Journeys and How Might We's
Firstly we have Nina, she is a user of the Story Creation side of OurHerd.
Secondly we have Sam and Zoe, users of the new wellbeing features of OurHerd.
Workshopping
To further understand the personas and the needs of our customers I co-ran a workshop with another team member with the Batyr and design teams where we explored our How Might We statements with Crazy 8's, Group Activities and MVP's.
Userflow
This flow articulates how Sam or Nina would move throughout the OurHerd app with both Story Creation and Wellbeing features integrated to reach their goals.
UI Design
To complete the design component for OurHerd I worked leading a team of 5 to create the Wellbeing feature. Wellbeing was to be designed into OurHerd as a completely new feature. With no boundaries we had complete freedom to create features that Sam and Zoe would need and use within the OurHerd app. Building off the current design language and GEL of the current app we adapted and added in UI elements that suited the wellbeing features best.
Due to the time constraints for this project, we were able to run 4 rounds of user testing throughout our development of low, medium and hi fidelity prototypes.
